Three Things Being a Videographer Has Changed About Me

July 28, 2026 by Katie Peterson

When people find out I’m a videographer, they usually picture the fun parts of the job - travelling to different places, flying drones, filming beautiful locations, and the creative experimentation leading to the finished video.

But what people don’t always see is everything this career has quietly taught me along the way.

When I first picked up a camera, I thought I’d just be learning how to shoot better footage and edit better videos. I never expected it to change the way I think, the way I see other people, or even the way I approach life.

Looking back, these are the three lessons I learned that stand out the most.

I’ve become incredibly more patient.

If you’d asked me a few years ago what skills I’d gain from becoming a videographer, patience probably wouldn’t have made the list.

And yet, here we are.

I've learned that some of the best moments simply can't be rushed.

Sometimes you're waiting for the clouds to move so the light is just right. Other times, you're waiting for customers to clear a space, traffic noise to disappear, or a business owner to relax enough to forget there's a camera pointed at them.

There have been days when I've spent more time standing around with a camera in my hands than actually pressing record.

Funny enough, I don't mind it anymore.

Some of my favorite shots have happened because I waited an extra five minutes instead of rushing to tick it off the shot list. It's a small reminder that not everything happens on your timeline, and that's TOTALLY okay.

I notice effort more than the final result.

One of the surprising things about filming businesses is how it changes the way I see them.

I used to walk into a café and just order a coffee. Now, I notice the staff who showed up before sunrise to get everything ready. I notice the owner greeting regular customers by name. I notice the little systems, routines, and teamwork that most people never think twice about.

The same goes for every business I work with.

Before filming, I usually spend some time learning about what they do, how they got started, and what goes into running the place. The more stories I hear, the more I realize how much work happens long before anyone sees the polished end result.

Maybe that’s why I enjoy making videos for businesses so much. A finished video might only last a minute, but behind THAT minute are YEARS of hard work, early mornings, tough decisions, and people who genuinely care about what they do.

Being a videographer has made me appreciate the journey just as much as the destination.

I value trust more than talent.

When I first started, I thought becoming a better videographer meant improving my camera skills, learning new editing techniques, or buying better equipment.

Those things DEFINITELY matter.

But over time, I've realized they're not the reason clients choose to work with me.

Clients are inviting me into their business. They're trusting me to tell their story, represent their brand, and capture something they've often spent years building. That's a responsibility I never take lightly.

I've learned that people don't remember what camera you used or what lens you shot with. They remember how comfortable you made them feel.

Some of the best footage I've ever captured didn't happen because I had the perfect settings. It happened because someone felt relaxed enough to be themselves.

That kind of trust can't be bought with new gear or learned from a YouTube tutorial. It's built through conversations, listening, and genuinely caring about the people standing in front of the lens.

Looking back...

I thought becoming a videographer would just teach me how to create beautiful videos.

Instead, it’s taught me patience when things don’t go to plan. It’s taught me to appreciate the hard work happening behind every business I film. And most importantly, it’s taught me that the relationships you build are far more valuable than the equipment you carry.

If there's one thing this job has taught me, it's that every business and every person has a story worth telling. I feel pretty lucky that I get to help tell some of them.

And if you're ever ready to tell yours, I'd love to help.
