Honestly, I don’t think most business owners struggle with content because they’re bad at it.
I think a lot of people are just making it way harder for themselves than it needs to be.
There’s so much pressure to constantly be original, post perfectly, say the right thing, keep up with trends, and somehow magically know what’s going to perform well every time.
And after a while, content starts feeling exhausting instead of useful.
Here are a few mistakes I see all the time when it comes to business video content:
1. Trying to Create Something Completely New Every Time
This is probably the biggest one.
A lot of business owners sit down to film and immediately think about what to post today.
So every video starts from zero. New idea. New angle. New structure.
And eventually, that gets tiring REALLY quickly.
Businesses that put out content regularly aren’t coming up with mind-blowing new ideas every week. Instead, they stick to a few specific styles, topics, or themes and keep coming back to them.
Things like:
- client questions
- common mistakes
- behind-the-scenes moments
- lessons learned
- opinions on your industry
- explaining your process differently
That is usually enough.
Instead of constantly trying to invent new content, focus on building a few repeatable formats you enjoy making. It removes so much pressure and makes content feel more sustainable long-term.
2. Thinking Repetition Is a Bad Thing
Your audience is not analysing your content the way you are. They are busy or distracted OR scrolling quickly.
And most of them are not seeing every single post you upload anyway.
Sometimes the content that performs best is simply:
- a topic you have already talked about
- a point explained more simply
- a different perspective on the same idea
- a reminder your audience needed again
You don’t have to keep reinventing the wheel all the time.
What really matters is being known for something. And you usually get that by sticking to your main message and repeating it consistently over time.
3. Creating Content Without a Clear Direction
Most people are posting consistently, but none of the content actually connects together.
One post sounds super educational. The next sounds corporate. The next sounds completely random.
And after a while, people stop understanding:
- what the business actually does
- who it helps
- or why they should follow along
This usually happens when people are creating content based on pressure instead of intention.
Good content usually has some kind of overall direction behind it.
That could be:
- educating your audience
- building trust
- showing personality
- positioning yourself as an expert
- attracting a certain type of client
You don’t need every post to go viral but you DO want your content to feel connected enough that people understand your business over time.
4. Overthinking Every Video Before Posting
This one slows people down massively (and we’re guilty of that too!)
People spend hours thinking about:
- the lighting
- the wording
- the camera angle
- whether they sound awkward
- whether the video is “good enough”
And because of that, content ends up getting delayed for weeks, or never posted at all.
The businesses that are thriving online are usually the ones that aren't afraid to post stuff that isn't perfect and just get better as they go along. When it comes to creating content, it's often true that you build your confidence AFTER you get into a groove, NOT before.
You learn:
- what your audience responds to
- what feels natural to say
- how you like filming
- what type of videos suit you best
…by actually posting and NOT by endlessly preparing to post.
5. Forgetting That Your Audience Wants Simplicity
Sometimes content becomes harder to connect with because people are trying too hard to sound professional, polished, or impressive online.
But most audiences are not looking for overly complicated content.
They are looking for content that feels:
- easy to follow
- relatable
- clear
- helpful
- human
People do not want to work hard to understand your videos.
Nobody wants to struggle to figure out your videos.
If it’s too complicated or just goes on forever, people will usually just scroll past.
The businesses that really connect with their audience are the ones that keep things simple and real. It’s not about having the flashiest edits or making everything perfect. Just be genuine!
And with that...
Most business owners aren’t having a tough time because they lack things to talk about. They usually struggle because their content feels all over the place or just way too complicated.
A solid content strategy gives you a foundation to work from instead of scrambling to come up with ideas every week.
And honestly, having the right creative help can make a bigger impact than you might think. *wink*
