What I Now Know About Video Marketing After 8 Years

April 30, 2025 by Katie Peterson

Eight years. Eight years of navigating the ever-evolving landscape of video marketing.

It feels like just yesterday I was fumbling with lighting setups and struggling to get the audio right. Back then, I thought I had it all figured out. I had big ideas about viral videos and instant success. Now, looking back, I realize how much I didn't know.

I've come to realize that the real magic of video marketing isn't what I initially thought it was.

The Illusion of Vanity Metrics

I’ve seen videos with millions of views that did absolutely nothing for a business. Zero. Nada. It’s a harsh reality check.

We get so caught up in the allure of big numbers, but those numbers don’t always translate to dollars in the bank. What really matters is the audience that cares. The people who engage, who ask questions, who trust you enough to become customers. Those are the folks you want. Conversions, engagement, building genuine trust – that’s where the real power lies. It’s about quality over quantity. Every. Single. Time.

Video as a Standalone Marketing Strategy

Video works best when it's part of your marketing strategy.

You can't just throw up a video and expect magic to happen. You need to integrate it with your email marketing, your website, your social media, your sales funnel – everything. It's a whole ecosystem, and video is a crucial part of it.

Your videos should support your other marketing efforts and guide your audience through the entire customer journey.

Video Marketing Is for Everyone

It’s not just for big brands, it's for everyone.

Small businesses, solopreneurs, creators. Video marketing is for everyone. You just need to find the right approach for your audience. You don't need a huge budget or a fancy studio to create impactful videos. You can use your smartphone, free editing software, and a little creativity to tell your story.

Also, don't limit your videos to just social media. Videos belong on your website, in your emails, in your ads, and everywhere else you connect with your audience. Think about how you can use video to educate, entertain, and engage your audience across all your platforms.

But Here's the Biggest Lesson I've Learned...

You don't have to be perfect.

You really don't. In fact, trying to be perfect can actually hurt you. People are tired of seeing polished, airbrushed, fake versions of reality. They want realness. They want to see the human behind the brand. It builds trust. And trust is everything. Video marketing is about storytelling, connecting, and providing value. It's about showing your audience who you are and what you do. It's about being authentic and relatable.

Eight years has taught me that video marketing is about more than just making pretty videos.

It's about building genuine relationships, telling compelling stories, and providing real value to your audience. It's about being human, being authentic, and being strategic. And that's something worth remembering, no matter how long you've been in the game.
