Reels vs. TikTok vs. YouTube Shorts: Where Should Your Business Be?

March 20, 2025 by Hanna Gazo
Reels vs. TikTok vs. YouTube Shorts Banner

The internet's IN LOVE with short videos, and it's hard to ignore the phenomenon that has taken over our screens. You can't scroll for long without seeing one. The big question is, with Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts all out there, how do you pick the best platform for your business's videos?

Let’s figure out which platform (or platforms) is the perfect fit for your brand.

Tiktok

TikTok, it's a whirlwind, a fast and furious digital landscape where trends come to life and fade away in mere moments. It's real, it's raw, and yes, it's a bit of an obsession.

Vibe: Super trendy, fast-paced, and authentic. TikTok is your playground if you're looking to hop on the latest challenges, showcase your brand's personality, and reach a younger audience. It’s where anything has the potential to catch the public's eye.

Pros:

  • TikTok's algorithm is a master at getting your content in front of new eyes.
  • If you nail a trend, you could see your views skyrocket.
  • It learns what users like quickly, meaning your content gets seen by the right people.

Cons:

  • Keeping up can feel like a full-time job.
  • What works today might not work tomorrow.
  • Sometimes it feels like you're just watching a never-ending stream of people doing dances you'll never learn.

Best For: Businesses targeting Gen Z, those who want to build brand awareness through entertaining content, and those who love a good challenge.

Monetization Tips:

  • Participate in TikTok's Creator Marketplace for brand partnerships.
  • Run TikTok ads targeting specific demographics and interests.
  • Use TikTok Shop to sell products directly within the app.

Reels

Reels is an engaging feature of Instagram that combines fun and creativity. It allows users to create short, entertaining videos that can capture attention and showcase their unique style.

Vibe: Offers a polished platform that feels integrated within the Instagram experience while retaining a vibrant social atmosphere. Great for showcasing products, behind-the-scenes content, and educational videos. It’s where you can show off your brand’s aesthetic and build a community around your content.

Pros:

  • Perfect for businesses already active on the platform.
  • Good for building community. Engage with your existing followers and attract new ones.
  • Offers more creative control than TikTok.

Cons:

  • Standing out can be a challenge.
  • Keeping up with Instagram's algorithm updates is a constant battle (because they always change!)

Best For: Businesses already established on Instagram, those who want to showcase their brand's visual aesthetic, and those who want to reach a diverse audience.

Monetization Tips:

  • Instagram Shopping Integration:
    • Tag products directly in your Reels. This allows viewers to tap on the product and purchase it without leaving the app.
    • Create shoppable Reels that showcase your products in action, demonstrating their features and benefits.
  • Brand Partnerships and Sponsored Reels:
    • Collaborate with influencers or other brands to create sponsored Reels that promote your products or services.
    • Clearly disclose any sponsored content using Instagram's branded content tools.
    • Find influencers that target your specific demographic.
  • Instagram Ads:
    • Run targeted ad campaigns using Reels placements to reach a wider audience.
    • Use compelling visuals and engaging content to capture attention and drive conversions.
    • Target users that have engaged with your reels in the past.
  • Affiliate Marketing:
    • Partner with other businesses to promote their products or services in your Reels and earn a commission on sales.
    • Use affiliate links in your bio or story to direct viewers to the product page.
  • Drive Traffic to Your Website or Landing Page:
    • Use Reels to promote your website, blog, or landing page.
    • Include a clear call to action (CTA) in your Reel or caption, such as "Link in bio" or "Swipe up."
  • Instagram Live Shopping:
    • Use reels to promote your instagram live shopping events.
    • Use reels to create hype around product drops that will be happening during your live shopping events.

YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts is focused on the long-term strategy. It's essential for establishing a meaningful and sustainable presence on the largest video platform in the world.

  • Vibe: More educational and informative than the other two. Great for tutorials, product demos, and repurposing existing YouTube content.

  • Pros:
    • Massive YouTube Platform Integration
    • Drives traffic to your longer videos and build a loyal audience.
    • YouTube is a search engine, meaning your Shorts can be discovered through relevant searches.

  • Cons:
      • Building an audience can take time.
      • The editing features are still catching up to Reels and TikTok.

  • Best For: Businesses focused on creating educational content, those who want to build a long-term presence on YouTube, and those who already have a YouTube channel.

  • Monetization Tips:
    • Enable YouTube Partner Program monetization (ads) on your Shorts.
    • Use Shorts to promote longer YouTube videos and drive traffic to your channel.
    • Utilize YouTube's affiliate marketing features.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

The reality is, what works for one business won't necessarily work for another. It boils down to your individual goals, the audience you're aiming for, and your overall content plan.

Here's our take: If you can post your short-form videos to Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, absolutely do it!

Each platform is like a different room in a huge networking event. You wouldn't just stay in one room. You'd want to mingle and meet as many people as possible. These three platforms are where your potential clients are hanging out, and you never know which one they're browsing when they stumble upon your content.

Manually uploading videos to Reels, TikTok, and Shorts takes time, no doubt. But it's worth it. You gain the ability to fine-tune every aspect of your content. You can customize your captions, hashtags, and even the video content to better connect with each specific audience. It's about being strategic rather than just spreading content everywhere.

Bottom line? You need videos that people actually want to watch, not just any videos. And you need to learn the ropes of each platform to really make them work for you.

We understand the struggle.

Being a business owner is a rollercoaster. You're not just the creative genius behind your product or service. You're also the marketing manager, the customer service rep, the accountant… the list goes on! If managing your social media, especially on creating videos for your business, feels like it's taking up too much of your precious time, that's where we come in.

Take a look at what we can do for you.
