3 Marketing Myths Small Businesses Need to Let Go Of

October 24, 2025 by Hanna Gazo

Marketing advice is EVERYWHERE.

Scroll through Instagram for five minutes and you’ll find someone telling you what you should be doing: post more, sell harder, mimic the big players, go viral, etc.

But for small businesses, that kind of thinking can do more harm than good. Because your business? It’s built on connection, not cookie-cutter strategies.

Still, there are a few marketing myths that seem to stick around no matter how much things evolve. Myths that might actually be holding you back from connecting with your audience in a more genuine, impactful way.

Let’s bust three of the biggest ones.

“Marketing is just about selling.”

A lot of small business owners feel uncomfortable promoting themselves because they think marketing has to be pushy or sales-y. But here’s the truth, it doesn’t.

Marketing isn’t just about selling, it’s about connecting.

Good marketing builds trust before it ever asks for a sale. It gives people a reason to care about what you do and helps them see how your product or service fits into their story.

How video fits in:

Video lets you go beyond the transaction and share the emotion behind your business. It shows your heart, your values, and your “why.”

Marketing isn’t about convincing people to buy. It’s about helping them believe in what you do.

Your audience doesn’t want a polished performance, they want you.

Authentic, story-driven videos that show your process, your people, or your personality will always feel more real than a corporate-style ad.

Film the imperfect moments. Laugh on camera. Show your workspace, your team, your vibe. Those are the things that make small businesses stand out.

“I should copy what big brands are doing.”

Big brands have slick campaigns, fancy visuals, and thousands of dollars to spend on ads. But copying them doesn’t just waste time, it can actually make your brand feel disconnected from your real audience.

You don’t need to look like a big brand to make a big impact. Your authenticity is what makes people stop scrolling and pay attention.

How video fits in:

Video gives you the perfect way to showcase your authenticity.

It doesn’t have to be polished or cinematic, it just has to be real. Film those imperfect, funny, heartfelt moments that show who you are and why you love what you do. Share your team, your workspace, your story.

When you lead with authenticity, people don’t just buy from you,  they root for you.

“My audience already knows what I do.”

This one hits close to home because I’ve been there too. There was a moment when someone genuinely asked me what we do, and it made me pause.

It made me think about how I show up online. I felt like my content already explained what we do. I post our work, share tips, and talk about video marketing all the time. But it was a good reminder that even if you have a loyal following or consistent audience, not everyone knows your full story.

Some people might be new to your page, others might only see one post out of ten, and some might not have connected the dots yet.

People need reminders, and that’s okay. Repetition doesn’t mean you’re being redundant, it means you’re being clear.

How video fits in:

Video makes repetition feel fresh. You can show your services in action, feature customer experiences, or highlight different parts of your process in a visual, engaging way. The same core message: why your business matters, becomes something people enjoy seeing.

A short “day in the life” clip, a testimonial, or even a quick “did you know we offer this?” reel can go a long way in keeping your business top-of-mind.

Sometimes people aren’t ignoring you, they just need a reminder.

The Bottom Line

Marketing isn’t about selling harder, copying louder, or assuming people already know you. It’s building relationships, showing up with intention, and reminding people why your work matters.

Video bridges the gap between you and your audience, helping people not just understand your business, but connect with it on a personal level.

If you’re ready to tell your story through video and reach people who actually care, we’d love to help you make it happen.

Let’s create something real, intentional, and unforgettable.
