The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Videographer for Your Business

July 9, 2024 by Katie Peterson

As we know it, videos are everywhere these days. You scroll through social media and see eye-catching product demos. You land on a website and get hooked by a company story.

Videos are powerful tools for businesses, but with so many videographers out there, how do you find the perfect fit for your next project?

We’re here to break down the key steps that might help you find a videographer that is a perfect fit for you and your business!

1. Know your “Why”

Before you begin to look at or collect videographer profiles, take a moment to get clear on your project's goals. Ask yourself the following:

  • What kind of video am I creating?
  • What's the message I want to convey?
  • Who is my target audience?
  • How do I want them to feel and what do I want them to do after watching?

Knowing your video's purpose will guide your search for a videographer who specializes in that specific area.

2. Check their Portfolio

So now you begin the search…

Most videographers will have a website or online platform showcasing their past work.

This is your chance to see their style, their storytelling ability, and most importantly, if their vibe aligns with your brand.

Look for videos that:

  • Match your project's tone and feel. Do you want it to be lighthearted and fun? Or serious and informative? Make sure to know what you want because you’re going to have to work with them.
  • Demonstrate technical skills. Sharp camera work? Smooth editing? This is a crucial process to know how well they know their work and their professionalism.
  • Evoke emotions. Did the video make you laugh, cry, or inspired to learn more?   A great video will elicit a reaction. This emotional connection makes videos so powerful, and it's something to keep in mind as you browse portfolios.

3. Communication is definitely the KEY

Reach out to a few videographers who caught your eye. This initial contact is crucial to assess their communication style and professionalism.

Here are some red flags to watch out for:

  • Slow response times. Smooth communication is important! So if they take forever to get back to you now, imagine during filming!
  • Unclear pricing or packages. Get a proposal outlining costs and deliverables. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
  • Unrealistic turnaround times. Quality takes time, but be wary of someone promising the moon and stars on an impossible deadline.

4. Feel their Vibe (Virtually or In-Person)

If all goes well in the initial contact, consider a consultation (video call or in-person, depending on location). This is your chance to delve deeper:

  • Discuss your project vision in detail.
  • Ask about their creative process. How do they collaborate with clients? Do they prefer a structured approach with storyboards and scripts, or are they more flexible and open to adapting on the fly? This will depend on your own working style and comfort level.
  • Discuss your timeline and budget. A good videographer will be upfront and realistic about what can be achieved within your constraints. They should also be able to offer creative solutions to stretch your budget further.
  • Get a feel for their personality. This is just as important as technical skills! You'll be working closely with this person (or team) throughout the project, so you need to feel comfortable and confident that you can communicate effectively. A consultation is a two-way street: you're interviewing them, and they're interviewing you to see if you're a good fit for each other.

5. Here’s a Bonus Tip!

Don't hesitate to ask for references from past clients!

Satisfied customers are a videographer's best advertising!

Reach out to a few references and ask about their experience working with the videographer - we know this might sound like a LOT of work, but hey, some videographers have websites that showcase their past clients with testimonials.

You can simply check their social media feedback or see if they have some Google reviews, in this way, you would know if they are trustworthy or how well they are to their clients.

Choosing the right videographer is an investment, but it's one that can pay off in spades. By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to finding a creative partner who can bring your business video project to life!
